What did you do with your RV this weekend? (Aug 14-15, 2021)

....I flew Saturday morning (11 day non-RV dry spell due to life). Storms in the area made for 74*F temps and pleasing visuals. Fuel run and some more engine data recorded to plod over sometime. Some water seepage into the cockpit has me thinking I need to update my wet setup a bit. Will work on that. Pretty good shower SE of my home field on the return - flew over the field to check the wind sock for outflow but they where I left them.

What a welcome change to our area after so many weeks of 100*F heat indexes. The mental battery is recharged for a bit <g>.

Flew to three places today. Checked a mountain airstrip. Beautiful but rough for RV.

Then flew over Aspen to the highest airport in the country to get the cheapest gas in the area. Leadville Colorado. The gas will stay $4 until supply runs out might last till Xmas.

Even managed to get groceries and a six pack somewhere in WY before turbulence starts.

When not dealing with more car woes (long story), worked at the hangar on the empennage final assembly. Couldn't resist rolling the fuselage outside and practicing cockpit entry, canopy actuation and exiting cockpit. Back at home, completed basecoats on left wing. Should have both wings painted and at the hangar this month.

Nobody can compete with Martin John. I like that huge cardboard box you put your backpack on :D

Ha Ha. Hopefully it will be an EMPTY box in a week.

And Vlad, Thanks for the flying picks, somehow I feel we are not worthy.....

Great Lakes STOL Competition

This weekend was the Great Michigan Bush Company's inaugural "Great Lakes STOL" competition. I, of course, had to represent the RV contingent

I almost got Van's published numbers for the RV-4 with my 160hp, FP airplane. I blame my larger takeoff numbers on the fact that I'm not near the body weight I'm sure Van was when he was testing... Still! Van's Aircraft shows 300' TO and Landing distances on their website. I achieved a 336' takeoff and a 425' landing while sliding to a stop on the wet grass! Pretty fun to see what my little RV-4 can do against some of the more conventional "Bush" planes.

It was quite fun rolling the tailwheel on the ground and just clearing the line before pulling the power and braking.

And then I speedily passed them all after the event on their way home :D

Such a fun event and I hope we get a bigger turnout next year.

Took off from Borrego Springs on Friday and flew to Riverside for lunch and gas. Then took off and headed north to Salinas for a weekend getaway. Flew home today. I ❤️ my RV!

Tonight, bought a 9A slider. Figured what the hell? Should be a blast.

Dirty RV10

My normally clean RV10 is dirty with bugs, grass inside and out :):) and I am very happy about this. Great weekend at Moontown Airport (3M5) flying children and family off a grass strip. Some of the very young ones (too young to sit in back by themselves) simply enjoyed taxing up\down the runway. Great use of an airplane.

Jerry Barnett, owner of the FBO\field was so friendly and welcoming!!

Will get it all washed up and clean this week.

How about some photos? Love to see that 14A!:D

Smoky flight

Northern California was full of smoke this weekend. I was planning to get away to Tahoe area and had to divert as I was beginning to lose sight of the ground during my climb. Over the day the smoke thickened. Be very careful as AWOS doesn't always see the haze.

Walking along South Lake this morning we could not see any peaks. I joked it was one day the boats on the lake that normally look goofy sporting a radar might just be useful. I feel bad for anyone that is here vacationing for the first time.

Pretty good breeze this evening cleared a lot out, from our perch on the east ridgeline we could see the sunset across the lake going down behind the western ridges. Still hazy, but much better.

Oil and filter change and then replacing all baffle seals - project still ongoing. Trying to get those CHTs down.
