Ah! I would look at the difference in each spring rates being the cause. If you disassemble the mechanism you'll see two springs that are compressed depending upon the movement of the unbent rod.

Don't be afraid...

I cut the ends off and re-terminated all the connectors using MIL-C/DTL machined crimp terminations and D-sub back shells.

Just don't tell anyone :)

I used 51/64", 59/64" and 1 1/16" as specified in DWG 7, Revision 5 (R5 - 2/25/03) and then adjusted accordingly to get it to fit.
