RV14A Best Glide & Sink Rate at Best Glide

VJO

I'm New Here
I have a new RV14A. I'm trying to use the Garmin Smart Glide. It requires VG (Best Glide) as well as Sink Rate at Best Glide. It seems like consensus has VG at 82 to 87Kts. Can anyone help with sink rate at VG?

While I intend to test my plane myself for both VG and Sink Rate at VG, I'd like to use the Smart Glide using approximations till I can get this done. Is this a bad idea?

Bad Idea? No. I like your idea of going to practice and test. Also if constant speed prop going to High Pitch (Low RPM) Blue ball pulled back, increases glide distance (if governor is making enough oil pressure). If I were you, I'd commit speeds and procedures (loss of power in all phases of flight) to memory (motor memory). GPS with airports in glide range is a wonderful piece of technology but airmanship rules the day not the GPS.

What is best glide ratio? I would start with 10 to 1 (some say 8:1 some 12:1). Be conservative at first programing your GPS and adjust as you decide. How far you can glide power off of course depends on winds, gross weight, prop wind-milling or not (course of fine pitch).

Welcome to Forum, use search to see if there are other threads already. Congrats on the new plane. Cheers
