"Brian Denk" <akroguy @ hotmail.com> Just got back from LOE2. Those that were able to attend, had a great time! That crappy scud that grounded our eastern brethren was truly noticeable. Last year, the ramp was packed with RV's all the way down towards the east end where Col. Borman's hangar sits. This year, just a few rows of airplanes made it. Most came from the west, New Mexico (myself, Larry Pardue, Norm Schippers and Charles Fink) and a few squeeked in through IMC from Texas and yes, even Alabama. An intrepid RV6A driver braved the wx and made it....IFR for quite a ways so he told me. He's a corporate pilot so he's obviously quite IFR current. He also won a craftsmanship award and longest distance flown award. Well done! The Van's guys were there with the RV-9 (yes, the taildragger version) and the RV-7. That -9 is SWEEEET folks. Both were flying constantly. The RV dreamers and builders probably outnumbered the fliers this year by quite a margin. I gave a couple of rides myself, and Paul Rosales was continually airborne delivering RV grins. We managed a four-ship formation flight, with yours truly in the lead. Man, I sure hacked my way through it, but evidently it looked good from the ground. The SoCal wing guys did all the hard work flying off my wings and tail. The wx was really quite nice, with scattered puffies most of the time. More serious looking shower activity showed up Saturday late day and several of us scurried our airplanes over to the sunshade for hail protection...which didn't show up. The banquet that night was great of course, with Red Marron doing his usual bangup job as master of ceremonies. Good food, groovy mariachis, and great RV friends. All was well, but we missed our eastern friends! Next year folks...next year. What really made this one special for me was my son, Skyler. He made his first cross country trip in the RV! He did just great, sitting on Debbie's lap, strapped down to her lap belt with a padded belt I found at Baby's R Us. He slept the whole way down and back home as well. That Lycosaur drone does wonders. "Hon, Skyler won't fall asleep. Gotta go fly. Be right back." Hehe. That could come in handy! We placed plugs in his ears for hearing protection. He just won't tolerate a headset, nor will they fit at only 10 months of age. He was quite the hit at the fly-in. I think his hugs and kisses quota is quite satisfied for this month. Fly safely folks. Brian Denk RV8 N94BD 312 hrs.
Jim Steele (jimsteele @ comcast.net) VAF Message Board We flew down to Las Cruces on Friday to try to see some RVs. We couldn't stay long, as we had to get our rented Cessna back and be back in Albquerque by that night, but we took a few photos while we were there. If anybody would like to see them, please visit our website, www.rv7a.net. http://www.rv7a.net/
From: Ron Lee <ronlee @ pcisys.net> VAFYahoo Group Date: Sun Oct 27, 2002 3:47pm Subject: Just back from LOE 2 Drove down from COS Thursday. Weather was great there Friday. Estimated number of RVs - 40. Weather across the US was a real factor. Still, plenty of nice airplanes and nice folks. It was obvious that the organizers did a great job up front and in execution. I watched the service as planes arrived and it was excellent. I hope that one "down" year due to weather does not impact future events. Hopefully I will be there next year in a 6A. Ron Lee
From: "Jeff Hall" <jhallrv4 @ attbi.com> VAFYahoo Groupa Date: Sun Oct 27, 2002 7:02 pm Subject: LOE2 trip a success! ...While not nearly as big as planned, it was nonetheless a whopping success. Didn't know about it last year, went this year, will go again next year! Managed to make it down on Friday, and back on Sunday! (A minor miracle, since almost no one from the Denver area made it out) Had to wait for the fog to lift at KFNL Fort Collins/Loveland, (11 am)lunch and fuel stop at Double Eagle airport at Albequerque, then followed the spectacular colors downriver to LRU. On the way home, it was a little trickier from Pueblo around Colorado Springs but then bases lifted past DEN and into the home stretch. About 7 and half hours total trip time. NOTE: If you get the chance to get into RATON, NM. don't pass up the chance. Great airport, beautiful area, and wonderful people at the FBO. Gas was very reasonable ($2.25)also! Again, thanks, to Doug, Red, and Adventure Aviation (Great people!) Jeff and Jenny Hall Fort Collins, Co. N605RV

Red advised over 80 DFW area cancellations called in. By noon Saturday (when we had to leave for Tucson) about 55 present. On to Santa Paula, CA on Wednesday. BCNU at LOE #3, hopefully with better WX next year. Howard Walrath RV-6A N55HW.
by Laird Owens... I uploaded a picture of what my RV looked like the morning after getting the award. See it at: http://members3.clubphoto.com/socal230330/974070/owner-9b41.phtml I had a great time hanging out at LOE2 with Brian and Larry and everybody else this past weekend. I'm sure it'll be HUGE next year! I just wish everyone else around the country could have made. I'm sure the award would have gone to someone else if everybody could have made it...but I'll take it anyway ;-) The award was just icing on the cake of a great weekend. For the new guys on the list who probably don't know, the "Fowling Piece" comment Brian made was because of the Hawk strike I took in the RV a couple of years ago. (If your interested about how a how a RV windshield holds up to a hawk, just check the archives searching Laird & Hawk, and some pictures at: http://members3.clubphoto.com/socal230330/429051/guest.phtml Laird RV-6 SoCal
I figured that I would put my 2 cents in from the prospective of a ground-bound want-to-be-builder. I mainly went to LOE2 to check out the RV-9 first hand and get a demo ride. Being a bit of a shy person to begin with, I felt a little out of place not knowing anyone and being at LOE2 by myself (my wife could not make the trip out with me). However, everyone that I had a conversation with was very open and willing to talk RVs and answer the endless questions I had. By the end of the banquet on Saturday night I felt like I belonged even though I am not even building yet. I had a blast on the demo ride in the RV-9 (thanks Ken Krueger). The banquet was a lot of fun -- I got lucky and ended up with Dorthy and Ken Krueger at my table. Part of what makes the RVs so great is the RV community. I know that I feel much better about building an RV due to the huge community, the great factory support, and the fact that there are so many RVs flying. It is just amazing to me how great the RV community is. [snip]
