Does This model have an encoder included?

Customers in the U.S. should be aware that FAA, Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) 91.227 requires that a compliant ADS-B Out solution uses a Class 1 transponder. The TT21 is a Class 2 device and does not meet this regulation.

Mel, does that mean one can’t fly in class B only?

The FAA requires ADS-B Out capability in the continental United States, in the ADS-B rule airspace designated by FAR 91.225:

  • Class A, B, and C airspace;
  • Class E airspace at or above 10,000 feet msl, excluding airspace at and below 2,500 feet agl;
  • Within 30 nautical miles of a Class B primary airport (the Mode C veil);
  • Above the ceiling and within the lateral boundaries of Class B or Class C airspace up to 10,000 feet;
  • Class E airspace over the Gulf of Mexico, at and above 3,000 feet msl, within 12 nm of the U.S. coast.

As I understand it, it is a legal transponder, but would need a separate ADS-B solution like a tail beacon or similar.

As stated in post #4, The TT21 is a Class 2 transponder with 130W output. The TT22 is a Class 1 transponder with 250W output.

In the US, ADS-B Out requires a Class 1 transponder. The quote in post 4 is taken directly from the Trig website.

The TT21 can be upgraded to TT22 for $950 which includes a new 2 year warranty.
